Your tour begins by meeting your guide at Catania–Fontanarossa Airport, welcoming and assisting you on a half an hour transfer to your 4* bed and breakfast on the seafront, with a pool and easy access to the sea. The guide will help you with check in and luggage and afterwards you will have time for yourself to enjoy personal leisure activities.
After the breakfast you will enjoy a full day excursion to Catania, the second-largest city in Sicily and the tenth in Italy, located on the east coast of Sicily between Messina and Syracuse and facing the Ionian Sea. Known for its seismic history, Catania was destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake in 1169, another in 1693, and several volcanic eruptions from the neighboring Mount Etna volcano, the most violent of which was in 1669. Catania has had a long and eventful history, having been founded in the 8th century BC. In 1434 it witnessed the opening of the first University in Sicily. Then in the 14th century and into the Renaissance, Catania was one of Italy’s most important and flourishing cultural, artistic, and political centers.
The excursion includes a visit to a tactile museum, which provides architectural and sculptural models of the main monuments and buildings of the city, making masterpieces accessible to people who are blind or visually impaired.
After the breakfast you will experience light hiking in the Alcantara Gorges, deep incisions in volcanic rocks and cliffs caused by the eruptions of Mount Etna. They lie a short distance from Taormina, where the mountain has been literally split and is now part of the course of the eponymous river. The water choruses over grey stone, now covered by dense vegetation climbing through the numerous crags and crevices in the rock. A less intrepid traveler can reach the gorges with a lift, but the more adventurous can descend into the gorge on foot, where the river can be followed for about 150 meters through mysterious shadowy rocky bends along the walls of the rock face.
After the breakfast you will enjoy a full day excursion to Taormina, Sicily’s most popular summer destination. Spectacularly perched on the side of a mountain, Taormina is a chic resort beloved among holidaying high-rollers and visiting celebs. And while it is unashamedly touristy and has a main street lined with high-end designer shops, the town remains an achingly beautiful spot with gorgeous medieval churches, a stunning Greek theatre and sweeping views over the Gulf of Naxos and Mt Etna.
After the breakfast you will enjoy a full day excursion to Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active volcanoes in the world, in an almost constant state of activity. Due to its history of recent activity and nearby population, Mount Etna has been designated a Decade Volcano by the United Nation and it was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in June 2013. The fertile volcanic soils support extensive agriculture, with vineyards and orchards spreading across the lower slopes of the mountain and the broad Plain of Catania to the south.
After the breakfast you will enjoy a visit to L’Orto Dei Semplici organic farm, where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy awesome sensory experience of tasting, smelling and touching a great deal of plants and fruit of every kind. Located on the west side of Mount Etna, this charming organic farm is a great chance to appreciate and love the genuine flavor of the organic products grown on the fertile soil offered by the volcano.
